I knew I had to have an espresso machine after using a friends Starbucks Barrista but that machine proved hard to find… guess it’s discontinued, so I opted for a Starbucks Serena which was a huge disappointment!! I promptly returned the Serena and ordered the Napolitana instead.

I went out to meet the UPS truck, and as I signed for my new machine, the UPS lady let the box tumble down the stairs of her truck and onto the ground..urgh!!

I eagerly unpacked the new machine, plugged it in, followed the directions to prime it, got steam…but no pump!! I was so disappointed!! I started to fill out the Amazon return form, but decided to sleep on it. The next morning I pulled out a screw driver, thinking that something had jiggled loose from the poor UPS handling, and after removing 2 screws and carefully prying the top off, I found that the wiring harness had slid off the pump. I pushed it back on, marveled at the simplicity of the parts inside, and had it put back together and brewing great espresso in 5 minutes (I don’t know that I would recommend doing this, as I probably voided the warranty, but who’s going to know :) ).

I brewed a great espresso the first time I used the machine, and am getting a little better with each one. I like the fact that I can make adjustments with the grinder, and adjust how much pressure I use with the tamper, and thereby have control over the quality of my crema, and the strength of the coffee. Even though I am a novice barrista, I like the fact that this machine allows me to learn and get better.

The quality of the machine seems excellent. The stainless steel looks great and is easy to clean. The portafilter is heavy and stays hot for a long time. The steam frother works great. The grinder is noisy, but I’ve never used one that wasn’t. I look forward to using this machine for years and years.

I bought the Garmin Approach G5 recently and due to winter weather have only used it on the course twice so far. These were at two different courses and the Garmin made a big difference in my enjoyment of playing each of them. The comfort in knowing the distance to the center of the greens reduced considerably the uncertainty/anxiety of trying to make an estimate based on somewhat obscure course markings. That was my primary reason for getting a range finder. The GPS feature makes it very easy to use and the huge built-in database of courses greatly exceeds my needs. So far, the original set of batteries has not needed replacing. The display is clear and easy to read in cloudy and sunny conditions.

Feature

  • Rugged, waterproof golf GPS unit with 3-inch sunlight-readable touschreen display
  • Preloaded U.S. course maps, including fairways, hazards, and greens
  • No annual fee; new maps available for download from Garmin.com
  • Measure shot distance with highly sensitive readings to eliminate guesswork from your game
  • Digital scorecard for up to four players; save and review the scores on your computer at home

I have always enjoyed good brewed coffee and espresso drinks but I didn’t want to go through all the mess and trouble of making coffee for just myself. I was introduced to the Nespresso CitZ for the first time in a Williams-Sonoma store and I was impressed with the speed and quality of the espresso served. This machine is elegant, very well designed and very much a topic of discussion in my kitchen where I am delighted to make espresso coffee drinks for my friends. The thought of being committed to purchasing espresso capsules exclusively from Nespresso crossed my mind but after tasting the high quality coffee in the store and listening to friends and total strangers rave about the machine I decided to purchase my machine from Amazon. My only minor complaint is that I wish the espresso produced was just a few degrees hotter. Nespresso suggests first warming the cup or glass with a shot of hot water prior to actually making the espresso. This is a small extra step but one I don’t mind taking. Purchasing coffee capsules from Nespresso is a snap and the online tracking and notification is top notch. My order usually arrives in a few days. This is my first espresso machine and I couldn’t be happier. Great tasting espresso that’s fast and easy to make and no mess. What’s not to love?

Gaggia 14101 Classic Espresso Machine, Brushed Stainless Steel

Review

I have been using the Gaggia Classic for over twelve years. The first machine is still going strong, but my ex-wife inherited it, so I am on the second and newer machine.

Both are well-made heavy duty units that are used to make 5-6 cups of espresso a day, and the occasional capuccino. The machine does this flawlessly.

Those of you who know espresso making know that a good cup of espresso requires these four things:

1. Temperature: Water temperature a bit below boiling; about 190F is right.
2. Pressure: Of upto 200 psi (about 15 atmospheres or bars)
3. Amount: You need 7 grams of coffee per espresso cup. The included scoop should give you the exact amount.
4. Time: About 25 seconds for enough water to flow through the coffee grounds to make one or two cups

The Classic does 1, 2 and 3 perfectly. By definition, you, the barista, are in charge of 4. This you achieve through grinding the coffee to the right degree of fineness and tamping it with the right amount of pressure. It is this you need to learn with just a bit of trial and error. But you must buy a burr grinder for your coffee to do this right.

A burr grinder does not have to be expensive. I have two (a Krups and a Capressa) at home that each cost less than . I have been using them for years without a problem. If they develop one, easy and inexpensive enough to replace.

When you start, try out three or four different levels of grinds, generally at the finer settings of your grinder. The grind should be about the consistency of table salt. Then try out three or so levels of tamping the grounds in the portafilter. Pretty soon you will zero on the combination that provides the right degree of resistance to the water pressure to take about 25 seconds. I found that a rogher grind with very high pressure, or the right grind with medium tamping presssure and a very fine grind with little or no pressure all do the job. Obviously, the right grind with medium pressure is the optimum. If the water flows out too quickly, the coffee will be weak and will not have any of the crema that is the mark of a well-made cup. If it takes too long, the coffee will be bitter and the crema will will be dark brown. I have also found that as I switch from one kind of beans to another, or even from one batch to another, I sometimes have to fine tune the grind setting.

In my experience it is very difficult to buy preground coffee, or have it ground by the seller, such that it makes good espresso in my machine. I suspect you will find the same thing. An alternative around this is to use ESE pods, which Starbucks and others sell. These pods have the right amount and grind of coffee sandwiched between two pieces of teabag paper. All you do is pop one in the machine and you get, mostly, a good cup of coffee. But pods are expensive, at about {BestCustomerReview}.50 a cup, compared to about {BestCustomerReview}.15 per cup from beans.

My old machine had a plain steel wand for frothing. Took a little skill and experience to learn how to froth, starting with high steam flow and with the wand-end almost at the bottom of the steaming cup, gradually reducing the steam flow and moving the end of the wand closer to the surface of the milk. Worked like a charm with a little experience. Cleanup was easy; a wet sponge to wipe off the milk residue and a squirt of steam to clean out the inside. My new machine has a new-fangled plastic gizmo with many internal parts that slips over the metal steam wand. Now my dog could likely make perfect froth with this, except that it is a pain to clean. I find the easiest thing to do is slip off the gizmo from the metal wand right after the frothing is done, run warm water on/through it in the sink and slip it back on. Seems to stay clean and does not require disassembly of the internal parts.

I don’t do much maintenance of my machine. I descale it twice a year and replace the silicone gasket/seal every few years, when the old one wears out and water begins to seep from it. You can find details for descaling elsewhere. All I do is run two cups of water with two tablespoons of citric acid crystals (bought at a baking supplies place) dissolved in it through my heated machine, as if I was making coffee but without grounds.

The Classic is well made, feels substantial, and works flawlessly. Are there other machines out there that are as good or better? Who can tell, without using each of them for some time. All I an say is that the Classic has been more than meeting the requirements of this picky engineer and coffee lover for over a decade.

Jura-Capresso 13185 Impressa F7 Espresso Machine, Silver Metallic

Review

If you are interested in figuring payback of your automatic coffee maker, read on….

Bought: December 08
Cups brewed to date: 398
Payback vs. coffee house: <6months

First of all, let me say up front that we searched for a long time before we decided on the F7. My wife is a Latte-holic and a good chunk of our budget went to the local coffee house on her way to work. I like a good cup of Java myself and so we pondered the question if an automatic home brewer would be a good investment? In short, YES. Membership wholesale places like C*stco are a great place to buy and return if you do not like a product. How ever, you are usually limited to only one or two models on the shelf. We went through several semi/full automatic coffee makers at our local mega store and had to return all of them for one or other reason. Mainly value vs. function and mostly- can it brew a good cup of coffee or Latte. For sake of keeping this review short I evaluated all factors in my decision for all candidates including: pressure in bar or psi, heating element, grinder, steam output, cleaning functions, easy of use, program functions, other reviews, and so on. We really liked the F7 and decided to buy it refurbished for $ 699 at 1st in coffee online through Amazon which included a return policy.
A big question before any purchase was the ROI or how long would it take for the machine to pay for itself vs. buying your Latte at the local coffee house.
I am not going to bore you with details and math but here are my conclusions:

Coffee house: 16oz Latte $ 3.55

Homebrew: 16oz Latte $ 0.57

( Electricity 1325Watt 3 minutes +/- @.12kw/hr, Milk (organic) 12-14oz, filtered water for steam and coffee brew 4oz +/- , coffee – ground or bean 1-2 TBS, sugar (organic) 1 ½ Tsp, hot water/soap for cleaning cup (dishwasher). Cost: $ 0.57 organic, $ 0.53 non-organic)

You can see that I actually included all factors in making a cup of coffee at home.
Lets take the $ 699 for the machine = 196 coffee house lattes.
Subtract the cost of homebrew from coffee house brew and the actual cost is $ 2.98 per cup until payback. Now $ 699 divided by $ 2.98 is 235 cups.
Yes, you would have to brew just about 235 cups at home to break even.
Now, we brew about 1.2 – 2 cups average per day…
So, for us the automatic coffee maker has payed off in less than 196 Days or about 6 months.
Pros: Several features not found on similar priced models, easy to load/clean, programmable brew settings, optional filter, auto on/off, pre-ground coffee option, bright display.
Cons: Only one preset (no his/hers preferences), steam nozzle has limited movability and produces flat foam only when cup is not handled. Larger cups are awkward to place under steam nozzle.
Can not grind oily beans well.(common with all auto brews).
All in all we love our Jura F7 and would recommend it.
