Payback vs. coffee house: <6months

First of all, let me say up front that we searched for a long time before we decided on the F7. My wife is a Latte-holic and a good chunk of our budget went to the local coffee house on her way to work. I like a good cup of Java myself and so we pondered the question if an automatic home brewer would be a good investment? In short, YES. Membership wholesale places like C*stco are a great place to buy and return if you do not like a product. How ever, you are usually limited to only one or two models on the shelf. We went through several semi/full automatic coffee makers at our local mega store and had to return all of them for one or other reason. Mainly value vs. function and mostly- can it brew a good cup of coffee or Latte. For sake of keeping this review short I evaluated all factors in my decision for all candidates including: pressure in bar or psi, heating element, grinder, steam output, cleaning functions, easy of use, program functions, other reviews, and so on. We really liked the F7 and decided to buy it refurbished for $ 699 at 1st in coffee online through Amazon which included a return policy.
A big question before any purchase was the ROI or how long would it take for the machine to pay for itself vs. buying your Latte at the local coffee house.
I am not going to bore you with details and math but here are my conclusions:

Coffee house: 16oz Latte $ 3.55

Homebrew: 16oz Latte $ 0.57

( Electricity 1325Watt 3 minutes +/- @.12kw/hr, Milk (organic) 12-14oz, filtered water for steam and coffee brew 4oz +/- , coffee – ground or bean 1-2 TBS, sugar (organic) 1 ½ Tsp, hot water/soap for cleaning cup (dishwasher). Cost: $ 0.57 organic, $ 0.53 non-organic)

You can see that I actually included all factors in making a cup of coffee at home.
Lets take the $ 699 for the machine = 196 coffee house lattes.
Subtract the cost of homebrew from coffee house brew and the actual cost is $ 2.98 per cup until payback. Now $ 699 divided by $ 2.98 is 235 cups.
Yes, you would have to brew just about 235 cups at home to break even.
Now, we brew about 1.2 – 2 cups average per day…
So, for us the automatic coffee maker has payed off in less than 196 Days or about 6 months.
Pros: Several features not found on similar priced models, easy to load/clean, programmable brew settings, optional filter, auto on/off, pre-ground coffee option, bright display.
Cons: Only one preset (no his/hers preferences), steam nozzle has limited movability and produces flat foam only when cup is not handled. Larger cups are awkward to place under steam nozzle.
Can not grind oily beans well.(common with all auto brews).
All in all we love our Jura F7 and would recommend it.

For the first frustrating week or so, the frothing nozzle flew off almost every time I used the Dual Frother Plus on my ENA5, but it has not happened since I realized that the heat was baking the milk and clogging up the sleeve and tip of the wand. So now I disassemble the frother and soak the parts for 15 minutes in a cup of hot water with a cap of Rinza Urnex Rinza Milk Frother Cleaner 12-MILK6-32 32oz. Bottle. I do this each and every day, and it keeps the frother scrupulously clean and completely trouble-free. Now that I have learned the ropes with the frother, I think I may try the frothXpress system that came standard with my machine, because I have the as-yet-unused Jura Cool Control milk chiller Jura 67083 Cool Control Milk Cooler sitting on the counter. But because of my memories of the hot, splattered milk with the Dual Frother, I may wait a few weeks longer before I try any new tricks.

And the coffee I make, with Illy beans illy Caffe Normale Whole Bean (Red Top) Coffee, 8.8 Ounce Tins (Pack of 2), is delicious. I never had a cup of black coffee in my entire life, not even when I lived in Rome, believe it or not, until I tried making a 1-ounce ristretto with my ENA5. (I bought the machine to make cappuccinos, but I hadn’t yet solved the frother problem.) I was shocked at how tasty it was, even from the very first sip. Now, maybe because of the small, 1-ounce sizes that I like, the first cup is not very hot, but the second cup always is. When I forget to turn the dial down to the 1-ounce setting, though, the larger volume of coffee that most of you will opt for will be hot from the very first cup.

The learning curve for the superautomatic was a little longer than I had expected. It looks so easy on the DVD, and it is, but that’s only after some practice. I still go back to the instruction manual and video to pick up some subtle points that I might have missed.

Update: I just hooked up the Jura Cool Control milk chiller to the frothXpress steamer, and they both worked to my complete satisfaction. The instructions were easy to understand, and I made a fine cappuccino. As you can tell, I am really happy with my espresso maker, and I hope that you will be too!

Since my last comment a year ago I have moved to the US and due to voltage have been forced to buy a new machine. Purchased exactly the same one and continue to be just as satisfied as with the first one. Paid the price – but having said that I see that costs are falling here. The new machine operates as consistently and well as the first. Recommendation therefore remains the same!
We bought this machine a month and a half ago with great anticipation since we experienced Nespresso several times before. Since we are fans of cappuccinos, Lattes and Macchiato’s this machine seemed to answer our needs. It did and in spades. Everything the machine is expected to do it does. I read other reviews but have not experienced any of the issues mentioned. The milk froth is fine, even adjustable. I prime/clean the spout after every session to make sure all is clear. Since you can adjust the quantities I was able to play around (drinking much coffee, strong and weak) before finding my ‘eureka!’. It’s simply the most easy coffee machine to use, with fantastic results. As for temperature of the coffee – I also felt sometimes the coffee wasn’t warm enough but after running my cappuccino mug under hot water before making the coffee for a moment this was no longer an issue.
We’ve had friends with typical home version espresso machines that just sit there until there is a special occasion because it’s just too much trouble – this machine has easily become an everyday machine for us since we got it, which is what I think Nespresso/Delonghi intended.

PROS: great coffee, many choices (even the short intense blends work in cappuccinos or long (luongo) coffees, space for taller glasses/cups for milk coffees, EASE OF USE!
CONS: price (pretty steep in the US – I bought mine in Switzerland for US0) but for the ease of use it’s worth it, the space for taller cups is relatively narrow so you need to find ones that will fit (your usual huge Starbucks mug won’t cut it here).
